HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One Printer Review

HP PhotoSmart eStation Review

The HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One is a combo device designed for the home office or single user and not the corporate office, as it lacks the ability to support multiple users. It includes a multifunction “printer/scanner/copier/fax, along with a tablet computer display. The HP PhotoSmart eStation supports Airprint, which means you can print to it directly from your iPhone or iPad or even a iPod Touch.

The HP PhotoSmart eStation touchscreen is in reality a separate 7-inch tablet, which the HP engineers call “the Zeen”. The Zeen is a Tablet running the Google Android operating system which comes with built in Wi-Fi connectivity to your home router. Because the Zeen is a Tablet, you can it around the home all by itself for web browsing, email, reading eBooks and so on.

What We Like

  • If you are looking for both a multifunction printer and a basic tablet (such as an eReader) then this package is a great value.
  • This device has a high Energy Star rating that, along with its ink management system, is designed to keep your ongoing printing costs down.
  • Print over wireless from any PC/ Mac computer or Apple iOS device, using Airprint, email printing or wi-fi.
  • It creates quality print output for both documents and photographs.

Room for Improvement

  • The initial configuration of the device can be a little difficult, so don’t be shy about calling in to the HP support desk to have them walk you through the process.
  • The Android tablet is an entry level tablet, and so there is only so much you can do with it. HP has placed limitations on the applications that you can install on the device, although this can be overcome if you know a little about the Android operating system.
  • This machine can work fine in a home environment but lacks the networking support required for an office environment.

In Closing

The HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One is a compelling Printer option for a home printer/fax/scanner/copier, with the benefit of an Android tablet thrown in. The Ability to printing from your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad is really simple and easy with the built in Airprint technology.

If you are not interested in having the Android tablet, an alternative Printer product that offers the other features is the HP Photosmart C410a at a cheaper price.

AirPrint Hacktivator for Mac

It has emerged that there is an easy way to install AirPrint on your Mac OS 10.6.5 computers without getting your hands dirty with this quick and dirty tool from NetPuting.

This so far is the easiest way to enable AirPrint on your Apple Mac

What you need?

  • An iPhone or iPad with 4.2GM
  • A Mac with Snow Leopard 10.6.5 installed
  • iTunes 10.1+ installed
  • AirPrintHacktivator

The application will attempt to detect if you have the right combination of OS and iTunes.

WARNING! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! It is working fine for me but don’t come crying if it break something on your Mac…

You can also Activate Airprint for Windows but as all things Microsoft, its a lot more complicated and troublesome.

You can do this manually, but the AirPrint Hacktivator just works beautifully.
If you want some more options I can suggest the Printopia software as reviewed at

How to enable AirPrint on Windows

How to use Airprint in Windows to any printer

AirPrint functionality was severely reduced just before Apple released iOS 4.2, retaining only support for a small number of HP Printers out of the Box.

How to enable Network AirPrint on your Windows PC?

All you need is the instructions below and the Airprint.zip files that you can download from Mediafire below

To Re-Enable AirPrint on Windows 7:

  • Install iTunes 10.1
  • Download AirPrint.zip (airprint.exe, libairprint.dll, XpdfPrint.dll)
  • Unzip it.
  • Make a folder, “C:\Program Files\AirPrint\” or (64-bit= C:\Program Files (x86)\AirPrint\”
  • Copy the files to “C:\Program Files\AirPrint\” or (64-bit= C:\Program Files (x86)\AirPrint\”
  • Run “cmd.exe” as administrator (Open “Run” from Start Menu and type CMD)
  • Run the following commands (There should be a space between ‘=’ and ‘”‘)

  • Windows 64bit:

    • sc.exe create AirPrint binPath= “C:\Program Files (x86)\AirPrint\airprint.exe -s” depend= “Bonjour Service” start= auto
    • sc.exe start AirPrint
  • Windows 32bit:

    • sc.exe create AirPrint binPath= “C:\Program Files\AirPrint\airprint.exe -s” depend= “Bonjour Service” start= auto
    • sc.exe start AirPrint
  • Let Windows Firewall allow AirPrint to communicate on the networks (Double click on the airprint.exe) or you can manually add to Windows Firewall exceptions.

  • Make sure you have set your printer as shared on both your network settings and on the printers settings.
  • On your device you will be asked for Admin ID and PW the first time you print unless you have a guest account enabled.

non wireless Airprint printer

Well, technically only wireless printers are AirPrint printers, but with the help of some software you could share your printer via AirPrint.

Introducing Printopia

The Software allows you to share any printer to which you can currently print via Wifi.

Whether you have an inkjet printer plugged into your Mac, a laser printer plugged into your router or even a network printer, if your Mac can print to it, Printopia will share it. Is your printer plugged into your AirPort or Time Capsule? No problem. Printopia translates for your printer, allowing it to speak to your iPhone or iPad even if it’s not an AirPrint-compatible printer. Printopia even supports many password-protected printers

The app even lets you print a PDF or JPG, saving it directly to a Dropbox.com folder if you aren’t fussed about printing it out physically.

Printopia for Airprint PrintingPrintopia [which is US$9.95 with a free 7-day trial] is a preference-pane that shows any printers you have installed on your Mac, and shares these so that when you choose to print from any compatible iOS app, your printer shows up in the menu.”

Printing to PDF

“You can choose to print to a PDF, which is then saved on the Mac.”

It doesn’t look like the app is available for PC users at the moment.
